Got a cold, drafty fireplace or no chimney at all? We'll fit an insert or direct-vent unit that suits what your house already has.

What goes into putting a fireplace in a Fayetteville home?

Fireplace installation in Fayetteville, NC puts a heating unit in your home. That's either an insert set inside the firebox, the part of your current fireplace where the fire burns, or a direct-vent unit that runs its own pipe out through a wall or the roof.

Most calls I get come from folks with an old masonry fireplace that eats wood and barely warms the room, a factory-built fireplace they'd like to finally use, or no chimney at all. First I figure out which one you've got, because that decides which units make sense for your house. The price and the schedule turn on the same things: the kind of unit, whether your chimney can be reused or new venting has to go in, and how much framing and surround work goes around it, such as a stone veneer face. I'll give you your own figure when I come out, and if the job needs a permit, we take care of it and sign for it as your contractor.

How do you know your fireplace setup needs a change?

Most folks don't call about a fireplace until something starts to bug them, like the cold, the smoke or the hassle. Here's what homeowners usually notice, and what each one tends to point to.

  • Your fire warms one room while the rest of the house stays cold, so it isn't doing much heating.

  • Cold air spills out of the fireplace when it's not lit, which usually means house heat is leaking up the flue.

  • You've stopped using the fireplace because hauling wood and cleaning ash isn't worth the little heat you get.

  • Smoke drifts into the room when you light a fire, which usually points to a draft or chimney problem.

  • Your house has no chimney, but you'd like a fire to sit by in the living room or den.

  • Cracked or crumbling firebrick in the firebox usually means repair work has to come before any insert goes in.

If smoke is coming back into the room, stop using the fireplace and call us before you light another fire rather than waiting to see if it clears up.

What happens when you call us about a fireplace in Fayetteville?

A fireplace job runs in a few plain steps. I'm the one who comes out to look at it, and I stay on the job with our crew from the first day to the last.

  1. Call or send a message

Tell us whether your house has a chimney and, if you know, whether the fireplace is masonry or factory built. We'll set up a time for me to come out.

  2. I come out and look

I look at the fireplace, the chimney and the room with you and answer your questions. Your estimate says which unit fits your house, what the venting and surround involve, and what it'll cost, so you aren't guessing.

  3. We take care of permits

If the job needs a permit, we handle it with the permit office and sign for it as your contractor. If it's not clear whether one's needed, we check with that office before we start.

  4. We install and clean up

I'm on site with our crew until the unit is in, the surround is finished and the room is cleaned up. Then I walk you through how it runs.

Inserts, gas venting and the surround around them

Most masonry fireplaces were built for burning wood, and an open wood fire is a very inefficient way to heat a house. An insert set in the firebox works much like a wood stove, and the flue liner, the lining run up inside your chimney, has to go in right for the insert to work the way it should. If the firebrick or the chimney needs repair first, we take care of that before the insert goes in.

Gas units come with their own rules. One vent maker's instructions say each direct-vent gas unit has to vent straight outside through its own separate pipe and can't be tied into a chimney that serves another wood or gas appliance. The unit you pick will come with its own instructions too. Gas piping is a licensed trade in North Carolina, overseen by the state board for plumbing, heating and fire sprinkler contractors.

The surround, the finished face around the unit, gives the fireplace most of its look and takes a good share of the time. We can build a new hearth wall in brick or concrete block and face it with brick or stone. On a new build I'd rather frame it and finish it once, properly, than rush the surround to save a day.

Fireplace installation questions from Fayetteville homeowners

How much does fireplace installation cost in Fayetteville, NC?

Fireplace and chimney installation in Fayetteville usually costs about $2,500 to $13,500 per project. That's the going rate around here, not our price. Where your job lands depends on the unit and how much new venting and finish work it needs, and I'll give you your own number when I come out.

Do I need a chimney to install a fireplace?

No. A direct-vent unit exhausts through a pipe in a wall or the roof, so a house with no masonry chimney can still have one. If you do have a sound chimney, an insert with a new liner run through it can put that chimney back to work.

How long does fireplace installation take?

National guides put most fireplace projects at one to three days, with an insert in a sound existing fireplace at the short end. New framing, venting and surround work stretch the job, so plan on extra time for a new build.

How do I know if my fireplace is factory built or masonry?

A masonry fireplace has a firebrick-lined firebox and a brick or block chimney, while a factory-built one, sometimes called zero-clearance, is a metal box set into a framed wall. It matters because a factory-built fireplace has to take an insert designed and tested for that exact unit, which runs more efficiently and pollutes less. If you can't tell, I'll sort it out when I come look.

Are ventless gas fireplaces worth it?

They can be, but a ventless unit puts everything it burns, water vapor included, right into the room. Owners who end up regretting theirs mostly complain about the smell and fogged-up windows. I'd usually rather vent a unit outside when your house allows it.

Who signs the permit application for a fireplace in Fayetteville?

In Fayetteville, a licensed contractor or their employee has to sign the permit application. The city's Building Plan Review & Inspections office voids applications signed by a real estate agent, a permit expeditor or anyone else, and legal action can follow, because the rule comes from state law. We're fully licensed and insured, and when your job needs a permit, we sign for it as your contractor.
